Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Clear-lens screen glasses, blue light readers and photochromic pairs, most of them R349. We will be straight with you: a 2023 Cochrane review found blue-light filtering lenses may not reduce eye strain from computer work, so buy them for comfort, magnification or fewer reflections, not as a cure. What does help at a desk is an anti-reflective coating, which our frames list, a screen 50 to 70 cm away and slightly below eye level, and a break every 20 minutes to look at something far away. If small print has started to blur, the magnification in our blue light readers, in +1.00, +1.50 and +2.00, is the part doing the work. If you move between the office and outside, the photochromic pairs at R399 darken in sunlight and list UV400 protection. Every listing gives the lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimetres, so compare them with a pair you already find comfortable. Ready-made readers use the same strength in both lenses and do not correct astigmatism or distance vision. If your eyes need different strengths, or headaches and blurred vision persist, see an optometrist before buying any glasses. Two pairs at R349 clear the R500 line for free delivery.

Do blue light glasses really help?

Honestly, the evidence is mixed and we would rather say so. A 2023 Cochrane review pooling 17 trials found blue-light filtering lenses probably make little or no difference to eye strain at a screen. Where the evidence is stronger is evening light and sleep. We set out the research in full, including the parts that do not favour the product, on our Information page.

What is the difference between reading strength and prescription?

Reading strengths such as +1.00, +1.50 and +2.00 are ready-made magnification, the same in both lenses. A prescription is measured for your eyes and can differ between them, and can correct astigmatism. If you have astigmatism or different strengths in each eye, see an optometrist rather than ordering a ready-made pair.

Which reading strength should I choose?

If you already wear readers, order the strength you have. If you do not, most people starting to hold text further away are comfortable in +1.00 to +1.50, and the strength usually rises with age. It is a comfort choice rather than a medical one, and an eye test will tell you properly.

How do I work out which frame size suits me?

Every product page lists the model code and its measurements, in the order the industry uses: lens width, bridge width and temple length, all in millimetres. The quickest guide is a pair you already own, since those three numbers are usually printed on the inside of the temple arm. Match those and the fit will be close.
