A square face has a broad forehead, a strong jawline and roughly equal width from top to bottom. It is a striking bone structure, and the frames that suit it are the ones that soften rather than reinforce.
What works
- Round frames. The clearest contrast to an angular jaw, and the shape most reliably flattering here. A classic round metal frame is a good default.
- Oval frames. Slightly more conservative than fully round, with the same softening effect.
- Aviators. The teardrop shape curves inward at the bottom, which draws the eye away from a wide jaw. This is why aviators suit so many strong-featured faces.
- Frames with a curved or keyhole bridge. Detail at the bridge introduces a curve right in the middle of the face, where it does the most work.
- Lighter rims. Thin metal or semi-rimless designs avoid adding more visual weight to a face that already has definition.
What to be careful with
Heavy rectangular and boxy frames repeat the angles already present, and thick square acetate in particular can make the jaw look wider still. Small frames are the other risk: on a broad face they look undersized and emphasise the width around them.
Sharp geometric shapes with pronounced corners sit in the same category. Not forbidden, but they are working against the face rather than with it.
Proportion, not just shape
The common mistake with a square face is choosing a frame that is correctly shaped but too small. A broad face needs a frame with enough presence to balance it. As a guide, the frame should reach the widest part of your face and the lenses should be deep enough that your eyes sit near their centre rather than crowded at the top.
The measurements on the product page settle this quickly: lens width, bridge width and temple length, in millimetres. If you have a pair that fits well, those numbers are printed inside the temple arm and are the fastest shortcut there is.
Where the line is
Softening an angular face is a guideline rather than a rule, and strong features carry bold frames well. If you want a heavy square frame, size it generously and let it read as a deliberate choice rather than an accident of fit.
